A broach is a metal cutting tool, which has a series of sequential cutting bits, perpendicular in relation to the main movement direction. Broaches are used for processing by applying smooth or rotational movement of the blade, without the feed motion. There may be surface broaches and internal broaches. Broaches are used for profiled surface processing. Depending on the type of broached surfaces and cost of broaches, there may be keyway broaches, round, square, spline broaches, etc. A broach, which allows processing of several types of surfaces in one pass, is referred to as a combination broach. Depending on the cutting pattern, broaches are classified into broaches with profiled, stepped and group cutting pattern. As broaches are cutting tools, several classification features of the cutting bits may be used as the basis for classification of broaches.
